Chateau du Haut-Koenigsbourg, France

From series “The greatest France castles ”
Year: 19 century.

You can visit the medieval château du Haut-Koenigsbourg in the town of Selestat. It is surrounded by a large park on top of a hill. It is difficult to assume that the castle was built a little over a hundred years ago looking at this castle today. The fortress was built in the Middle Ages. It lay in ruins in the 19th century. It was completely restored for Kaiser Wilhelm II.

The very first mention of the fortress dates back to the end of the 8th century. According to the research of archaeologists, the first wooden castle was built on the ruins of an ancient Roman citadel. The fortress was repeatedly rebuilt and completely changed its appearance for hundreds of years of existence. Many of the nobles, Dukes, and royals were the owners of the castle. The fortress fell into disrepair in the middle of the 17th century. Interest in it returned only in the Renaissance.

The castle was restored almost in full accordance with the original appearance thanks to the preserved plans and sketches. An interesting historical museum is open in the castle today. A lot of interesting entertainment awaits visitors here. They can participate in various historical events and festivals, as well as real medieval feasts. You can try the most popular dishes in the national style as part of such feasts. Costume performances and musical concerts are held at château du Haut-Koenigsbourg several times a year.
