In the republic of Bashkortostan the Sibai copper mine is located. The mine is unique in size, it is one of the world’s leaders in mining industry. The quarry is almost 2000 meters wide and 500 meters deep. Its origin is very interesting and dates back more than 100 years ago.
For one of the legends, a large copper deposit has been discovered by a local hunter. When hunting, he dug a ferret’s hole up and pulled rare red clay to the surface. The presence of such clay in the soil is one of the main signs of the presence of copper. Already in 1913 there were large copper and gold reprocessing plants near the mine. However, they were destroyed during the Civil War.
Field development was resumed in 1939 only, and the first copper processing plant was opened in wartime, in 1944. The Sibai quarry has long enjoyed a well-deserved attention. It is located in a very scenic area. Although the object itself and the surrounding ares are protected by the government, there exist a lot of guided tours. Some observation points have been built near the mine, everyone can go down deep into the pit and see its bottom, which can hardly be seen from the surface because of its steep slopes.
