Chateau de Montbeliard, France

Montbéliard Castle is the main historical symbol of the city of the same name. It is located on the top of a cliff. The small settlement was located at the foot of the cliff during the reign of the Roman Empire. The first observation tower was built to protect it. The first official mention of the current castle dates back to the 11th century. Representatives of the Montbéliard House were its owners during the early Middle Ages.

The fate of the castle changed during the French Revolution. It was converted into a garrison. The building remained in this status until 1933. The fortress was converted into a museum in the middle of the 20th century. The most interesting exhibits are kept in it today. They date back to the Middle Ages and later. Archaeological research has been carried out on the castle grounds for many years. Many artifacts found here are displayed in the museum today.

Despite the difficult revolutionary period for the fortress, many things that belonged to the first owners were preserved in it. Beautiful antique furniture deserves special attention. It was installed in the halls even during the period of ownership of Monbeliard. The atmosphere of previous years was also restored in the castle kitchen. A collection of paintings by famous French painters is kept in the castle. It is often used for temporary exhibitions today. The castle is open to the public several days a month.
