Monument to Cosmaj Partisans

From the series “The most famous buildings of communism”
You can see a very unusual war memorial on the top of Kosmaj Mountain in Serbia. It is dedicated to the partisan detachment. The first mention of this unit dates back to July 1941. The detachment courageously defended the approaches to Belgrade from that moment until 1944. In total, more than 5,800 soldiers and partisans died in the Kosmaj region during the war. 16 fighters from their number subsequently received the title of National Heroes.
A huge monument commemorates their great feat. It was installed in 1971. It has gained worldwide fame for its unusual design. The monument is made in the form of a huge star. It is interesting to admire it both from a close distance and the surrounding viewing platforms. Several excellent viewing platforms are located on nearby Mount Avala. The branches of the trees almost completely hide the rays of a huge stone star in the middle of summer. Those who want to see the monument in all its glory and make the most spectacular photos should visit these places in early spring or late autumn. Several interesting monuments are also located on the slopes of Mount Avala. They are dedicated to the heroes and victims of the Second World War.
