One of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world is in Japan. Sakurajima volcano is constantly active since 1955. Researchers believe that its eruption may be the most extensive in the history. This disaster can begin at any time. One of the last eruptions happened in 2009. The volcano is located in the immediate vicinity of the city of Kagoshima, so its residents live in a permanent alert.
Literally, every day locals prepare themselves for disaster. There are many underground shelters built in the city. Exercises, which involve both adults and children, are regular here. Instant-acting web cameras have been installed over the volcano to track its activity in real time. The largest eruption of Sakurajima volcano happened in 1924. A huge amount of lava was thrown through the vent. It went out of the volcano, and then cooled.
The neck of land now connects the volcano with the island of Kyushu. It’s nothing but a stream of lava. After the eruption in 1924, lava was slowly flowing from the crater for more than ten months. That led to a significant increase of the bay’s depth. The height of one of the world's deadliest stratovolcanoes is 1 117 meters. It has three peaks releasing smoke over the last decades. Despite the great danger, Sakurajima volcano is very popular among tourists. There is a nice museum dedicated to the previous eruptions of the volcano close to the structure.
