Church of Savior on Blood, Russia

From series “15 Unofficial Man-Made Wonders of the World”
Year: 1907.

The unique architectural structure, which has the full right to be called the new wonder of the world, is found in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Church of the Savior on Blood owes its unusual name to a historical event. In 1881, the Russian Emperor Alexander II was mortally wounded at that place. The temple was originally built as a monument to Tsar-Martyr, donations for its construction were collected throughout Russia.

Church of Savior on Blood, Russia This graceful architectural monument is located on the banks of the Griboyedov Canal. The church is considered one of the most beautiful structures of not only St. Petersburg, but also the country as a whole. The official opening of the cathedral took place in 1907. Its construction took 24 years. Before the start, there was a competition that was attended by the most famous architects of the late 19th century. One of the most difficult stages of finishing was putting the mosaics in. It lasted for 10 years, so the consecration of the temple had been postponed several times.

When the cathedral was finally completed, it was striking not only by its artistic design, but also by advanced technologies. The Church of the Savior on Blood was one of the first all-electric buildings in the city, it was illuminated by 1 700 light bulbs or so. Today, visitors will be able to admire the fine finish of the temple. It includes wonderful mosaics, grand gilded chandeliers, stained-glass windows, and artistic painting. The exhibition of mosaics that can be seen in the walls of the cathedral is one of the largest in Europe. Next - Alhambra Castle

A few words should definitely be said about The Holy Trinity Alexander Nevsky Lavra which is a magnificent monastery complex. On its territory, there are several necropolises where tourists can take a walk. A special decoration of Tikhvin cemetery is the Necropolis of Art Masters. It is a huge collection of sculptural compositions created by famous artists. Those who like to walk around the graves of famous people should go to Nikolskoe cemetery, which is located in the same complex. Walking along the picturesque embankments of the city on the Neva River has a special romance to it, and it is hard to identify which of them is the best. However, the same applies to the magnificent park areas of the city. In the historical part of the cultural capital of Russia, there are so many interesting parks and gardens that their quantity is comparable to the amount of breweries in Munich.

Although, the same can be said about the museums of the city. The most unique cultural sites which are mandatory to be visited are described below. Nowadays, in the building of the majestic Sheremetev Palace is located the Museum of Music. A lot of interesting information about Russian composers could be learned here. Faberge Museum is no less impressive with its significant collection and brilliant interiors. There are two open-air cultural attractions which are obligatory for visiting. It is, of course, the State Museum-Reserve “Tsarskoye Selo” and the Museum-Reserve “Gatchina”.
