It has preserved many original elements of architecture. The main symbol of the religious monument is the gilded statue of the Virgin Mary. It is installed on its western tower. The cathedral is built in the Gothic style. An important pilgrimage site is located in it. This is the mausoleum of Pope John XXII.
Palace of the Popes is an equally remarkable architectural monument. Its construction began in 1316. It lasted for more than 60 years. The palace impresses with its incredible scale. It is one of the largest palaces in Europe today. A luxurious park surrounds it. Palace of the Popes has been a regular venue for the annual theater festival in recent years.
The ruins of the Pont Saint-Benezet are an important site. Its construction took place in the 12th century. It originally had 22 spans. Only four spans have survived to the present day. The old bridge was destroyed in 1669. Severe flooding occurred on the Rhone River at that time. The famous Calvet Museum is located in the historic district. It holds a priceless collection of works of art. The famous physician and collector Esprit Calvet bequeathed this collection to the city after his death. The museum was opened in the early 19th century.
