Amphitheater in Arles, France

From series “Ancient Amphitheaters and Arenas, That Are Still Operational”
Year: 90 year AD.

In Arles is a huge and incredibly beautiful antique amphitheater. It was built in 90 AD and is distinguished by its impressive size. Originally, the theater was designed for 20000 spectators. Such a large amphitheater was built not accidentally, it was used for large-scale battles, as well as chariot races. Now in summer, a completely restored arena is used for bullfighting, various concerts and theatrical performances.

Amphitheater in Arles, France Like many other ancient theaters, from the 6th century the amphitheater in Arles has been used as a fortress. It was here that local residents sheltered from the barbarians. In the shortest possible time the ancient theater was completely converted into a fortification structure. Inside, more than 200 buildings for various purposes were erected, including residential buildings, as well as two churches. At the end of the 18th century, city authorities decided to begin reconstruction of the amphitheater. At this time people still lived in its walls.

By 1825, they were all resettled, and already in 1830 the first theatrical performance took place in the amphitheater. During numerous reconstructions, architects managed to preserve the former grandeur of the ancient monument. The length of its ellipsoidal arena is 136 meters, and its width is 107 meters. The building has also preserved its incredible acoustic features. Performances taking place in the ancient theatre will impress even the most experienced travellers. Next - Caesarea Theater
