No other city of France can be proud of such rich ancient times heritage. The central part of the city is the location of a huge arena that was built 2000 years ago. Even these days the arena is used to conduct theater performances, concerts and other cultural events. The amphitheater has become the signature place of Nimes. It does look very unusual and looks more like the famous Coliseum than an ancient monument of one of French cities.
Start the observation of the city's attractions from the Garden of Fountains. Many years ago a spring with fresh water has been found in this area. The spring has become the main source of water for the city. Nowadays a gorgeous garden was planted near the spring. In this garden you can see fountains of most unusual shapes and designs. There is an important architectural place of interest near the garden - the Temple of Diana. In the Middle Ages the temple was converted into a church, but this place was damaged severely during the time of war. On one of the hills of the city you will find a majestic Tower of Man, on the top of which is opened a lovely observation area. According to one version, the tower was built by Emperor Augustus and was used as a defensive facility. After visiting all historic sites of Nimes, go for a walk along the main street of the city. Here you will find many interesting shops and restaurants. This street is pedestrians only, so nothing will disturb you during your walk.
