Clochan an Aifir, United Kingdom

From series “The Most Surrealistic Places of the Earth”
The Irish coast of Antrim is known all over the world thanks to the unique natural attraction that is called Giant's Causeway ('Giant's Dam'). This is an incredibly beautiful and harmonious rock formation, formed by more than 40,000 basalt columns. The fact that the columns extend as a flat path into the sea makes the object even more attractive.

Clochan an Aifir, United Kingdom Since ancient times, there is a legend in Ireland, according to which the mysterious path from the outstanding fighter Fionn mac Cumhaill was to fight with the sea monster. The modern scientists combine the appearance of the strange 'path' with the strong volcanic eruption that happened more than 50 million years ago. At present the natural site is protected by the National Fund and is one of the most visited objects in Northern Ireland.

The basalt columns forming the 'path' are before the regular hexagonal shape, which arouses the doubts about their natural origin. In reality the curious view of this harmonic natural complex is due to elementary physical laws. Under the influence of cold sea water, the heated volcanic lava stagnated rapidly and burst, forming the regular hexagonal columns. Giant's Causeway stretches over 150 meters into the sea and is reminiscent of the original dam. The diameter of each column is about one and a half meters. The unusual natural formation on the coast of Antrim is not unique, the similar lava formations can be seen in other countries. The giant's embankment is distinguished by the geometrically regular shapes and the harmonious shape. Next - Tunnel of Love
