Glenveagh Castle is located in County Donegal within the National Park of the same name. It is one of the youngest castles in Ireland. Its construction took three years. It was fully completed in 1873. The castle is located in a very beautiful mountain area. Impenetrable forests surround it. There are also lakes in the vicinity of the castle. They serve as a natural defense. Captain John Adera was the founder of the magnificent castle. He initially sought to build the most luxurious fortress that would surpass the Royal residence in the beauty of design and grandeur.
Wealthy American Henry Plumer McIlhenny became the owner of the castle in the first half of the 20th century. The historic building became the property of Ireland in 1981. The old castle with a garden is one of the main attractions of the National Park today. It is most interesting to visit it in the warm season. The tour of the castle is designed for several hours. Tourists can visit the most interesting rooms and hidden corners of the fortress in addition to walking through the picturesque garden.
The old greenhouse has been preserved on the territory of the castle. You can see quite a few exotic plants there. There are several excellent viewing platforms on the castle grounds. They are suitable for admiring the park and a memorable photoshoot. In many ways, the castle is known for the fact that its founder acquired land for construction illegally. He evicted hundreds of people from the purchased land. Many of them were forced to move to other countries. According to one legend, one of the local women cursed the owner of the castle. It was because of her curse that no child was born in the castle in a hundred years of private ownership.
