Chartres Cathedral, France

From series “Gothic Architecture – Magnificent Monuments”
Year: 13 century.

The amazing Chartres Cathedral also never ceases to amaze with its unique Gothic appearance. It was built in 1194. The main part of the huge cathedral was built in 1250. Many elements of the building's architecture have remained unchanged since then. The ancient cathedral is an important center of pilgrimage. An important catholic relic is located in it. This is the Holy Shroud of the Virgin Mary. It is believed that this shroud was on Mary at the time when she gave birth to Jesus.

Chartres Cathedral, France Many interesting events have been associated with the cathedral since its construction. The entire city was almost completely in ruins after a major fire in 1134. The church that was located on the site of the cathedral was almost untouched by fire. The sacred shroud was already kept in the church at this time. Residents regarded this amazing event as a sign from above. The miraculous rescue of the relic from the fire prompted residents to build a new cathedral.

Thousands of citizens volunteered at local quarries to deliver the stone to the construction site. Donations for the construction of the new cathedral were brought in Chartres from various cities in France. In addition to the unique appearance of the cathedral, there are many other amazing features. There are more than 150 windows on its facade. Some of them were created in the 12th century. Colored stained glass windows are of particular value. Their total area is about 2,000 square meters. Special paints were used by masters to paint stained-glass windows. They were distinguished by incredible durability and beauty of color. Modern scientists have not been able to reveal the method of obtaining these colors. Next - Scranton City Hall
