St. James Theatre, New Zealand

From series “Rococo Architecture – Famous Monuments”
Year: 1912.

The St. James's Theatre is a symbolic landmark not only for Wellington but for New Zealand as a whole. It was opened in 1912. The beautiful historical theater can accommodate up to 3,000 spectators at a time today. The history of the foundation of this theater is incredibly interesting. The church was located on its site until the end of the 19th century. The famous artist John Fuller bought the land in 1899. It was he who decided to build a theater on the site of an old dilapidated church.

St. James Theatre, New Zealand However, the theater did not last long. It was declared a fire hazard and destroyed in 1911. Another theater was built in its place. It has been operating for more than a hundred years. Rumors that ghosts live in the theater began to spread around the city from the moment it opened. They repeatedly appeared to the artists right during the performances. Visitors to the theater also witnessed many paranormal phenomena. The historic theater lost its former glory by 1970. The last performance took place there in 1987. The theater was closed after that.

The theater received its audience again only 10 years later. Not only fans of theatrical art but also those who are interested in paranormal phenomena often visit it today. The theater's employees and regular visitors claim that the ghost of a young Russian actor named Yuri lives in the theater. The Ghost of the Wailing Woman is considered the most terrible. The modern theater is famous not only for its mystical stories but also for its luxurious interior. It was restored following the traditions of previous years. Next - Wurzburg Residence
