Eilean Donan Castle, Scotland

From series “Deserted Places Causing the Feeling of Chill”
Year: 13th century.

There are many mysterious haunted castles in Scotland. Not everyone dares to go there. A special place among them belongs to the Eileen Donan Castle. It is situated on the rocky island of Loch Duich. The castle has an interesting and eventful history. The place came into disrepair in the 19th century, during Jacobin uprisings, and remained in a dilapidated state until 1911.

Eilean Donan Castle, Scotland The amazing castle was built in the 13th century and got its present name because of the monk Dolan, who lived on the island in the 7th century. The modern history of the castle is largely associated with the name of the Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrapa who bought the castle in 1912 and started its complete restoration. According to the initial draft of the castle that have been preserved in the archives of Edinburgh, the place was rebuilt to the form that it has had in the Middle Ages. The stone bridge that connected the island with the rocky shore of the lake was reconstructed too.

Today, the ancient castle features both incredibly romantic and frightening atmosphere. Many creepy legends about ghosts and undead souls are associated with it. Back in 1935, The Ghost Goes West was shot within the walls of the castle. Fans of mythical stories are attracted there. Travelers who want to visit the Eilean Donan castle have to consider that tours are carried out only during the period from early March to early November. In the cold season, the castle is closed for visiting. Next - Orpheum Theatre
