Eilean Donnain Castle, Scotland

Eilean Donnain Castle is a very popular historical place. It was located on a small rocky island on Loch Duich fiord in the western Highlands of Scotland. The castle and island were named after the monk Donnain who lived there as an anchor for a long time. The first fortress was built on the island in the 13th century. For hundreds of years, the castle was in a centre of the huge battles. In 1719 during one, the castle was drastically ruined, since that time no one lived there. Only in 1911, the castle was bought by John Macrae-Gilstrap.

Eilean Donnain Castle, Scotland The new owner decided to reconstruct the historical building. All works took about 20 years. Some rooms belong to Macrae-Gilstrap, family members are famous for their charity activity. In the first part of the 20th century, Eilean Donnain Castle attracted directors from the whole world. The picturesque castle was frequently used in popular films. In 2014 there was shoot a film “Outlander”.

Travelers can get into the castle from March to November, in winter the castle is closed. During the excursion, tourist will see a lot of outstanding things and even more, there it is possible to try a wonderful heather honey. All types of this product are presented in the castle.
