Forte Rose, Montenegro

From series “Famous Abandoned Military Bases and Forts”
Year: 17th century.

Those who want to hike through the really deserted and hidden military facilities can travel to Montenegro and visit the suburb of Herceg Novi. In the western part of the Lustica peninsula there are ancient Forts Roses, which until recently remained outside the attention of tourists. Drowning in thickets of wild trees and plants, the ruins of old military buildings look simply amazing. Lovers of history in Montenegro will hardly find a better place to relax.

Forte Rose, Montenegro The fortifications, the ruins of which can be seen today, were erected by the Turks in the 17th century. In addition to the fragments of the fortifications, one can also see elements of the old railroad. On the coast, the ruins of the old port have been preserved. In the first half of the 20th century, the Italians completely destroyed and rebuilt most of the fortifications built by the Turks. Some parts of the fort have been preserved very well up to our days. The main building of the fort was built of durable stone and supplemented with metal fittings.

It is incredibly exciting to visit and explore the three-storey building. Here, you will find many bunkers, stairs and platforms for the installation of military equipment. Curious guests can walk through the narrow corridors and steep stairs. Not far from the fort there is a complex system of catacombs, which will also appeal to lovers of independent historical research. Surrounded by the old forts, there are now several small hotels, so you can spend a few days in this interesting and picturesque area. Next - Obruchev Fort

Herceg Novi is the right place in this case.

In 1382, King Stefan Tvrtko I built a fortress in this area, establishing a new settlement, Herceg Novi. However, the town had another name at that time – Sveti Stefan. When the king died, the fortress got a new owner, Duke Sandalj Hranic. He made this area an important center of salt trading. When the duke died and his nephew Stjepan Vukčić became the ruler in the region, Herceg Novi finally became a town. Stjepan Vukčić also gave a name to the new town – Herceg Novi. In the 80s of the 15th century, the Ottomans captured the town and remained its owners for as long as two centuries.
