Year: 17th century. Height: 840 meters above sea level.
Ostrog Monastery in Montenegro is a religious monument unique in all respects. It is one of the few shrines in the world that can be attended by both Muslims and Catholics. The monastery is an incredibly beautiful architectural complex carved in the rocks. Only a few similar structures have survived in the world. The location of the monastery is unique, as it’s literally built in the sheer rock wall and is 840 meters above sea level. The founder of the monastery was Basil, the bishop of Herzegovina; the shrine was founded in the 17th century.
The monastery owes its name to the majestic mountain, where the former is located; excursions around these places are incredibly popular among tourists. Travelers can reach the foot of the mountain by bus, but they have to use long steep stairs to climb to the entrance to the monastery. In the early 20th century, the building was severely damaged by fire, but it was completely restored in the shortest possible time. Monks rescued some unique items, including two fitted cave churches with ancient frescos and priceless relics. A trip to the monastery will impress not only deeply religious people, but also those fond of natural beauty, as the shrine is surrounded by fabulous landscapes.
