Monastery the Jail, Montenegro

From series “The Most Remote Monasteries and Temples in the World”
Year: 17th century. Height: 840 meters above sea level.

Ostrog Monastery in Montenegro is a religious monument unique in all respects. It is one of the few shrines in the world that can be attended by both Muslims and Catholics. The monastery is an incredibly beautiful architectural complex carved in the rocks. Only a few similar structures have survived in the world. The location of the monastery is unique, as it’s literally built in the sheer rock wall and is 840 meters above sea level. The founder of the monastery was Basil, the bishop of Herzegovina; the shrine was founded in the 17th century.

Monastery the Jail, Montenegro The monastery owes its name to the majestic mountain, where the former is located; excursions around these places are incredibly popular among tourists. Travelers can reach the foot of the mountain by bus, but they have to use long steep stairs to climb to the entrance to the monastery. In the early 20th century, the building was severely damaged by fire, but it was completely restored in the shortest possible time. Monks rescued some unique items, including two fitted cave churches with ancient frescos and priceless relics. A trip to the monastery will impress not only deeply religious people, but also those fond of natural beauty, as the shrine is surrounded by fabulous landscapes. Top destination around Monastery the Jail - Podgorica

During the years of the war the city was literally wiped off the face of the earth, so the buildings, which can be seen today, were built in the second half of the 20th century. The locals have done their best, so nowadays Podgorica simply amazes visitors by grandeur of parks and squares, which surround beautiful tall buildings. The most ambitious architectural projects of the 21st century are Millennium Bridge and Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, which are located near the center. There is another monument, which will be interesting to travellers from Russia. In 2004, a sculpture of Vladimir Vysotsky was installed on one of the squares.

The only ancient structures that have survived in Podgornica are Turkish fortresses built in the 15th century and castle of King Nicholas Negush, construction of which took place in the 19th century. Today the palace hosts the exhibition of Art Gallery, so besides the observation of rich-decorated halls visitors can see the works of famous sculptors and painters. Church of St. George built in the 12th century is the oldest building of religious character. Tourists are also offered to visit another Roman settlement, which has managed to survive - an ancient town called Doklea. Here you can see the ruins of ancient temples, terms and forums.
