Sightseeing in Herceg Novi - what to see. Complete travel guide

South Adriatic offers tourists to visit a beautiful green resort with lush flora and relict trees. The latter peculiarity of the region is the reason why this part of the country is famous as Montenegro’s botanical garden. This resort can offer fresh air, tender sun, and a tranquil atmosphere perfect for a peaceful stay. Are you searching for a suitable vacation destination for a family with kids? Herceg Novi is the right place in this case.
In 1382, King Stefan Tvrtko I built a fortress in this area, establishing a new settlement, Herceg Novi. However, the town had another name at that time – Sveti Stefan. When the king died, the fortress got a new owner, Duke Sandalj Hranic. He made this area an important center of salt trading. When the duke died and his nephew Stjepan Vukčić became the ruler in the region, Herceg Novi finally became a town. Stjepan Vukčić also gave a name to the new town – Herceg Novi. In the 80s of the 15th century, the Ottomans captured the town and remained its owners for as long as two centuries.
Two centuries later, the Venetians managed to defeat the Ottomans and add the fertile land of Herceg Novi to the territory of the Venetian Republic. The following events brought many troubles and challenges for residents of the town. Venetians remained the rulers in the region until 1797. During the war with Napoleon, Russian troops invaded the settlement. The popular resort survived the periods of French and Austrian reign. Austrians occupied Herceg Novi until 1918. For many years, the town was a part of Yugoslavia until its dismemberment. Nowadays, the resort town is a part of Montenegro. Copyright www.orangesmile.com
Despite its beauty, Herceg Novi cannot offer really comfortable beaches. As a rule, the majority of beaches have a concrete surface. Do you like scuba diving? In this case, diving here is a must because the underwater world of the resort keeps many secrets. There are sunken ships not far from the coast, and they still lie on the bottom. If you have enough experience in diving, you will find it incredibly interesting to explore the underwater heritage of this region. Beginner divers are also not forgotten in Herceg Novi. There are many diving schools that are always ready to explain and show beginners how to dive and swim underwater.
Even though local beaches do not look similar to traditional beaches in most resorts, tourists can enjoy quality recreation here. The central beach is usually the first place that vacationers like to visit. This is a coastal area with a surface that is a mix of sand and pebbles. The beach has the standard infrastructure: sun umbrellas and loungers for rent, as well as numerous cafes and restaurants along the coast.
If you choose to relax at this beach, keep in mind that the majority of vacationers prefer the central beach too, so this coastal area is always crowded. It is better to come to the beach early in order to find a good place to sit and sunbathe. The sea bottom and the beach are covered with a mix of sand and pebbles. It is better to wear beach shoes in order not to injure your feet.
Would you like to relax in a more comfortable place? In this case, you need to reach Zanjic, a settlement situated on the peninsula named Lustica. Many tourists in Herceg Novi prefer to visit Zanjic Beach for recreation. When talking to local people, tourists may hear another name of this beach – the Presidential Beach. Locals call it this way because the president of Yugoslavia liked relaxing at this beach in the 20th century.
Vacationers can always rent sun loungers or simply lie on their own towels. The entrance is free for everyone. This is a pebble beach, but all pebbles are smooth and don’t have sharp edges. Zanjic is perfectly suitable for tourists with children because the water is shallow near the coast. The weather is always calm and there are no high waves here because the beach is situated in a bay that safely protects the area from strong winds. There is a rescue team that works round the clock in order to make sure that everyone is safe.
Njivice is a nearby town that is famous for its beach, so tourists from Herceg Novi frequently visit it. Njivice Beach is a clean coastal area with a sand and pebble surface. It is easy to reach this beach by boat. As the sea is shallow near the coast, this beach is suitable for vacationers with children. As the depth is not big, the water is always warm and pleasant. Would you like to try water sports? In this case, different water entertainments are here at your service. Tourists can always rent a scooter or try water skiing.
Tivat Airport is situated thirty kilometers from Herceg Novi. Many international airlines fly to this airport. If you prefer to travel in a car from other cities in Montenegro, use the Adriatic road that goes straight to the resort town. There is a no less interesting way to get to Herceg Novi – by ferry. There is a ferry that regularly takes tourists and locals across the Verige Strait.

Sightseeing in Montenegro: things to see

The majority of execution routes in Montenegro start with a visit to Ostrog Monastery. This is a unique architectural complex which never ceases to amaze travelers with its unusual shape and style. The building is located on a high rock; the monastery is literally built into a complex of naturally made caves. Even nowadays it's still hard to imagine how medieval masters managed to make the monastery in such a skilful way. Ostrog Monastery is divided into two levels - the high and the low ones. In order to reach the high part of the monastery, one needs to work on a winding path through the forest. As there are several important Christian artefacts in the monastery, Ostrog is always full with pilgrims. … Open
