If you happen to be in Mayan ruins take a chance and visit the surroundings near the city of Mérida (it is located in the west of Yucatan, 4 hrs. by car from Cancun) and make the Ruta Puuc. The route usually takes two days, as there are lots of things that may draw your interest, but if you do not have so much time, you had better start early in the morning. The most impressive places there are Uxmal, Sayil and Labna. They all are very large and are really well preserved. Then you can go to Chichen Itza and again: do not miss the villages on your way to the point as they all have their own value which is not less important then value of all the big cities and towns of the region. Sometimes they have even more places of interest.
Now let's return to Cancun. One more attraction of it is opportunity to dive and admire marine wonders.
Around Ruta Maya there are waterholes near mangrove area called Cenotes, some of them are filled with clean fresh water and are open for swimming.
