Actually the city is split into two main areas: Zona Hotelera and Ciudad Cancun. The first one represents a 18 km long island facing by its long and sunny beach with lots of fancy hotels the Caribbean on one side and a beautiful lagoon Laguna Nichupte on the other. The second main area of the city is in the mainland. This area is mostly inhabited by people and this is the region where tourists can find some accommodation at a rather low price. The two parts of the city are connected by a long bridge and we may say that they represent two different worlds. Ciudad Cancun is more Mexican with cozy restaurants and bars and Zona Hotelera is more like a modern a fashionable Las Vegas with a beautiful beach, malls and bars with the almost the only difference: there no casinos in Cancun.
Not far from Cancun there are Maya sites that are much of tourists' interest and help to get acquainted with the precolombian civilization of Mexico. Majority of tourists prefer to visit Chichen Itza that takes 2 or 3 hours of car driving. If you go slowly and pay attention to things and places around, you are sure to get real pleasure of observing such places as, for example, Cobá and Tulum, near Playa del Carmen, which ruins are near water that contributes to its beauty. The region is rather spread out along a huge territory that is why for those who decide to get acquainted with the territory renting a bike is recommended for the purpose to have an opportunity to see much of the region's beauty. For this very purpose you can also use a nice high pyramid if you climb it.
