A complex system of undergrounds has placed under the American Portland’s China town and was called Shanghai tunnels. The researchers still don’t know the original aim of this labyrinths. Some suppose that they were used for illegal transporting of goods and people. Earlier in Portland, a great number of people were snatched and pressed to work on vessels. That’s why the theory of original usage of the tunnels goes back to the transporting kidnapped people.
We can’t point the accurate date of tunnels building. According to one, they have appeared in the beginning of the 19th century. The underground passages join the port area with a number of restaurants and hotels of the historical part of the city. This makes us think that the official usage of this passages was connected with this. There was a time when hotels and restaurants got products and other staff through these tunnels. They were used during the bad weather and other environmental conditions.
Today a great number of undergrounds is open for tourists. In the middle of the 19th century this area was quite dangerous. During the walk, you can see some outstanding rooms where the old furniture and other items were saved from the owners of these tunnels. All tunnels that were leading to the port area are destroyed but there is no doubt that they were there.
