Archivum Secretum Apostolicum Vaticanum, Vatican

From series “Forbidden Construction Objects with Label "Access Denied"”
In Vatican there is a private storehouse of the Pope, in which the most valuable documents of the Roman Catholic Church are presented. Among the documents collected in the archive, literally everyone is unique. The age of some documents is more than 1200 years. In total, according to researchers' estimates, more than one million artifacts are stored in the depository. The length of the archive racks is about 84 km. An access to the secret object, besides the Pope, have only attendants of the highest ranks of the church.

Archivum Secretum Apostolicum Vaticanum, Vatican Visiting a secret archive is allowed to theologians and historians, but it's incredibly difficult to get such a permission. Each scientist, when visiting the archive, is accompanied by two priests and two guardsmen. Visitors of the vault are allowed to take only a pen and a piece of paper. With secret archives, as with any classified object in the world, many fantastic stories are connected. Some adherents of the conspiracy theory believe that the archives contain the world's largest collection of occult literature, for which half of the storage area is dedicated.

According to official data, the archive was founded in the early 17th century, however, many believe that the repository was built several hundred years earlier. Scientists had access to the archive for the first time in 1881, and today some documents of the archive are periodically opened for general access. Each year, the Vatican Secret Archive is visited by about 1500 scientists from around the world, the only way to see its priceless artifacts is to do a scientific research and prove the church its scientific importance. There is a secret street in Rome - via Piccolomini - the unique characteristic of which is known only to some travelers. This street offers a panoramic view of the St. Peter’s Basilica, the one that is seen through the keyhole of the old metal door. However, the main peculiarity is not in the view. During a walk on the street, you will notice a fascinating optical illusion. You will not be able to look at the cupola closer – when you walk towards the basilica, it looks like it’s slipping away. The further you are from the cupola, the bigger it looks. That’s a miraculous trick of vision.
