The Israeli city of Eilat is known to many travelers for its beautiful beaches and luxury hotels. Not everyone knows that this city is one of the oldest in the world. The port city was founded thousands of years ago. It was known as Etzion Gever in ancient times. The first official mention of the city dates back to the 10th century BC. But the finds of archaeologists indicate that the city was formed much earlier.
Nelson Glick was one of the first explorers to visit the unique archaeological area. He arrived here in 1937. It was his team that first discovered the ruins of the ancient port city. The ancient seal has become one of the most valuable finds. The name of the king of Joatham was indicated on it. The city was conquered and changed its name during the reign of the Roman Empire. The Romans called it Ayla. Several important archaeological areas are located near Eilat today. Research continues on their territory. Tourists are allowed to visit some areas. But the ancient city of Eilat attracts most travelers with its picturesque coast and a variety of inhabitants of the underwater world.
