Glenbuchat Castle is the most romantic place in Scotland. It was built there in 1590 for John Gordon of Cairnbarrow to mark his wedding. In front of the entrance has placed a memorial stone that resembles this. At once this place is romantic and tragedy one. Sons of John and Helen got a lot of disputes about the heritage. They put their mother in a room for a month in order she can’t interfere them.
From 1948 the castle is under control of the state. It is open for visitors during the whole year. Notwithstanding that the old castle doesn’t have a roof, all elements of the construction were saved. The last owner of the castle was John Gordon, a famous leader of Jacobite’s rebellions of 1715 and 1745. After the Battle of Culloden, he had to leave motherland and died in exile. The castle step by step fell into a state of neglect.
Today the castle is quite popular among tourists. From this place opens a wonderful panorama view of the endless fields and mountains. The castle is surrounded with a great park that is under control of Deeside Field Club. Together with the Historic Environment Scotland, the staff members of this organization look after the safety of this castle and nearby landscapes.
