This is a port town located in the southern part of the country. Kalmar occupies the territory of several islands that are connected through a system of bridges. This makes this place quite unusual for tourists and, thus, Kalmar is visited by larger number of guests year after year. The total length of bridges estimates 6,700 meters; currently Kalmar is a large center of shipbuilding and food industry.
Kalmar Castle is known as the main historical monument of the town. Every day the halls of the castle greet new visitors who have come to attend an excursion. The room of Erik XIV Vasa is considered the most beautiful. The walls of the room are decorated with elegant wall plateau with finest crafts. In the rooms you will also see old furniture and fantastic details of the interior. The castle will amaze you by the large number of secret passages, original halls and unparalleled atmosphere of the medieval times. Besides the fact the castle has been totally turned into a museum, some of its halls are opened to conduct banquets and conferences. Quite often here take place various concerts and cultural events. The town is surrounded by park that was founded yet in 1880. Here you can see different exotic plants, many of which are totally uncommon for this region. Each evening fascinating music performances take place in the park.
One more important place of interest of Kalmar is Cathedral – the building of the beginning of the 17th century built in baroque style. Marine Museum and Kalmar Museum of Arts are the most visited museums of this town. The first museum will provide you with interesting information about industrial and military history of the city, while the second one will get you acquainted with magnificent works of famous painters.
One more interesting fact about Kalmar – all bridges in the city are in private ownership of local people, so now each bridge is decorated with a plate featuring the name of the owner.
