Manchester Hostels

Manchester is located in the north west of England. Its history begins with the Romans who founded here a fort and a settlement around 79AD. Historical records show that in the 16th century Manchester was a center of the wool trade, and with the onset of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century it became an important manufacturing city known for its textile production. Manchester’s achievements were so impressive that during the Victorian era it was called "Cottonopolis" and "Warehouse City".

After the years of prosperity, the city entered a period of economic recession during the 1960-70s. When the city nearly recovered, Manchester suffered a further setback when in 1996 the Irish Republicans detonated a large bomb in a department store in the city centre. However, this sad event turned out to be the beginning of the city's regeneration. A huge amount of money and effort was put into rebuilding the center and other parts of the city. Manchester was transformed into a large modern metropolis with 21st-century style.
