After the years of prosperity, the city entered a period of economic recession during the 1960-70s. When the city nearly recovered, Manchester suffered a further setback when in 1996 the Irish Republicans detonated a large bomb in a department store in the city centre. However, this sad event turned out to be the beginning of the city's regeneration. A huge amount of money and effort was put into rebuilding the center and other parts of the city. Manchester was transformed into a large modern metropolis with 21st-century style.

As it always happens with all great cities, it is the people who really make the place special. Mancunians have an attitude to life and a way of doing things their own way. They are known as friendly and open people with and an appetite for adventure (and a party).
