The symbol of modern Brussels is the Atomium, projected by A. Waterkeyn for the World's Fair in Brussels of 1958. The spheres of the Atomium symbolize atoms in a model of an iron crystal, which is enlarged in 165 billion times. The tubes that connect the iron molecules symbolize the connecting strength.
