Culture of Narva. Places to visit - old town, temples, theaters, museums and palaces

Narva Narva's main historical symbol is the ancient castle Hermanni linnus, the only architectural monument in the city that managed to survive from knightly times. The construction of this castle began at a time when the territory of the present city belonged to the Danes. Construction works lasted several decades and were completed when the city was in the hands of the Livonian Order. The main architectural feature of the castle is a high tower, which has remained unchanged since its erection. The top of this tower is now equipped with an observation deck, and behind the fortress walls, there is a real cultural and historical center.
The atmosphere of medieval life was recreated on the castle grounds along with several craft workshops. There is even a pharmacy where you can buy medicines made from natural ingredients. The castle houses an interesting historical museum, which presents many thematic rooms. Visitors can see exhibitions dedicated to the history of the city, as well as the castle's history and peculiarities. One of the most interesting is the one devoted to the life and craft traditions of the indigenous population. Apart from standard expositions, the castle also hosts temporary exhibitions. Narva's main historical building is surrounded by a beautiful garden where you can admire original landscape decorations and an old fountain.
Besides the ancient castle, Narva has preserved a bastion that was built a little later. During its construction, the city was ruled by Sweden. The need for the construction of new defensive structures arose after the invention of gunpowder. Additional bastions were erected around the castle to install guns and equip two-story casemates. Over time, the defenses lost their original purpose but weren't dismantled. Today, the bastion is one of the most photographed attractions in town. Copyright www.orangesmile.com

One of the beautiful historic buildings with a snow-white facade houses the art gallery Narva Kunstigalerii opened in 1991. Its exposition is based on paintings from the private collection of merchant Sergei Lavretsov. From the moment of founding, the collection has been constantly expanding and replenished with new exhibits. Now its visitors can see works by Pfanzelt, Aivazovsky, Lagorio, and other world-famous artists. The gallery building is of great historical value itself. During the reconstruction period, it was possible to preserve its exterior and interior decoration as much as possible.
A vivid historical monument of the 19th century is the Krenholm Manufacturing Company. It was founded in 1857 and is still operational. At the beginning of the 20th century, the company employed more than 10,000 people. During that period, it was one of the largest enterprises not only in the city but in the country. Today, its large-scale building is of great interest from an architectural point of view. The main construction material was red brick, due to which the building looks especially spectacular.

In the city, you can also find the old Town Hall, the construction of which began in 1668. Its building is a unique architectural monument, which surprisingly combines elements of Italian, Dutch, and German architecture. During the Second World War, the building was badly damaged. It was only possible to completely restore it in the 60s of the last century. Thanks to available historical drawings, the Town Hall was rebuilt in full accordance with an original building.
Among religious monuments, Narva Issanda Ülestõusmise peakirik is considered one of the most outstanding. It was built at the end of the 19th century and has been the main Orthodox church in Narva since its foundation. The construction of the church was initiated by order of Alexander III of Russia. It is a spectacular architectural monument in the Byzantine style. Ancient elements of decoration and works of art created more than a hundred years ago are stored inside the church. An old iconostasis is considered the main decoration of the temple.

Iconic cultural sights of Estonia

The oldest city in the Baltics, Tartu, is considered to be the cradle of science. In the early 17th century, one of the first universities in Europe was opened here. The elegant main building of the University of Tartu built in the traditions of classicism, crowns the architecture of the city. One of the intriguing places on the campus is the attic where former students were imprisoned in the past centuries. Today on its walls, doors and ceiling you can see the drawings and inscriptions left by them. All tourist routes in Tartu go through Inglisild or “Angel Bridge” which bears the Latin inscription that reads: “Leisure Renews the Powers”. Local students believe that if you walk along the bridge with a bated breath, then your wish will come true. … Open
