Narva's main historical symbol is the ancient castle Hermanni linnus, the only architectural monument in the city that managed to survive from knightly times. The construction of this castle began at a time when the territory of the present city belonged to the Danes. Construction works lasted several decades and were completed when the city was in the hands of the Livonian Order. The main architectural feature of the castle is a high tower, which has remained unchanged since its erection. The top of this tower is now equipped with an observation deck, and behind the fortress walls, there is a real cultural and historical center.
The atmosphere of medieval life was recreated on the castle grounds along with several craft workshops. There is even a pharmacy where you can buy medicines made from natural ingredients. The castle houses an interesting historical museum, which presents many thematic rooms. Visitors can see exhibitions dedicated to the history of the city, as well as the castle's history and peculiarities. One of the most interesting is the one devoted to the life and craft traditions of the indigenous population. Apart from standard expositions, the castle also hosts temporary exhibitions. A vivid historical monument of the 19th century is the Krenholm Manufacturing Company. It was founded in 1857 and is still operational.
