Culture of Jolly Beach. Places to visit - old town, temples, theaters, museums and palaces

Jolly Beach is a resort town on Antigua Island that never ceases to conquer hearts of its numerous guests. For a long time, there were military bases on the island, and a fail to visit them would definitely be a mistake. Perhaps, Fort Barrington is the most interesting destination. Besides learning the history of the fort and the island in general, visitors can also admire striking views of the seaside. Fort James is one more defensive fortification that deserves a visit. It was built by the British in 1739 in order to protect the island from the French. Nowadays, only several cannons and fragments of the walls have remained from the fort. Just like with Fort Barrington, stunning views of the surroundings are the biggest attraction of Fort James. Both the forts are located not far from St. John's.

However, it was rebuilt, and now visitors can admire the gorgeous building in its full glory. Holy Family Cathedral is one more interesting religious landmark of the island. It is famous for its unique relaxing atmosphere. This church is modern - it was built in 1987 – and has a contemporary design. Holy Family Cathedral has a bell tower with the biggest cross in the whole country.
It is also interesting to visit St. John’s in order to attend Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. It has a large cricket field, and the stadium can provide space for up to 10,000 spectators. Sir Vivian Richards Stadium was built in 2008. Many tourists try to buy tickets to cricket games that take place during their vacation as this is one of the most popular and loved sports on Antigua. Originally brought by the British, it has become a true “calling card” of the island. Needless to say, locals are big fans of cricket. When searching for a suitable place to relax and enjoy a stroll, don’t forget about Heritage Quay. Plymouth

From the series “Abandoned Places of the Earth with Distinct Marks of Civilization”
The deserted city of Plymouth is situated on the Caribbean island of Montserrat that was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493. The story of the place is very tragic. The reason for its depopulation is an ecological disaster, which was caused by the eruption of Soufriere Hills volcano. It happened in 1995. Iconic cultural sights of Antigua and Barbuda

The town of Codrington is located on the island of Barbuda. It was the family domain of a noble English family once. The island was leased to the British government for a purely symbolic fee – 1 fat pig per year. Government House is the oldest building on the island. It was built in 1694. The building has successfully survived several centuries. However, a hurricane severely damaged it in 1995. Unhurried, like everything else in the country, work to restore the building is underway today. You can see the ruins of the Codrington family mansion north of the town at the highest point of the island. This is the "Mountain House", built around 1720. … Open
