Church of Saint Maximus the Confessor

From the series “The Most Remote Monasteries and Temples in the World”
Among the most interesting religious shrines planet the Church of St. Maximus the Confessor in Georgia is certainly worth noting. This is where the Katskhi pillar is situated. Latter is one of the most famous and popular natural attractions in the country. The height of the limestone monolith that was formed millions of years ago is 40 meters.
The first church on the top of the rock formation was built more than a thousand years ago; a long time locals believed Katskhi pillar to be the main symbol of the god of fertility and hoped that climbing to it will give a man an opportunity to get close to heavenly forces. In the early Middle Ages, the church came to desolation; the ruins of first buildings were discovered only in 1944.
Under the leadership of the monk Maximus in the early 90 of the last century, the church was rebuilt and began to wear the name of its new founder. It’s difficult to imagine how people get to the top of the pillar, as old stairs on its slopes were gone. Modern travelers have the only option to get to the top – to use a dilapidated rusty ladder with bars hammered into the rock. That’s important to note that the church is closed for women. Men who dare enough courage to overcome an old staircase would have an opportunity to see a priceless relic, the altar cross of the 12th century, which was moved to the church immediately after its discovery. ... Inguri Dam

From the series “The Greatest Dams in the World”
In Georgia there is a dam that is worth seeing for tourists and travelers. Inguri Dam was built on the river of the same name and has a height of 272 meters, making it one of the highest settlements in the world. The construction work on the Inguri river began more than 50 years ago. For the first time the hydroelectric power plant had already started in 1977.
Together with the underground power plant, the dam forms a gigantic hydrotechnical complex, which is connected with the hydroelectric power station, which is located on the Eristskali river. Inguri is one of the most beautiful dams in the world thanks to the surrounding wonderful mountain landscapes. The charming Georgian town of Dzhavari and its surroundings have long attracted many tourists, so it was decided a few years ago to perfect the tourist infrastructure next to the dam. Since the dam is the closed object, the simple people can not get to it. At the disposal of the curious tourists is an excellent viewing platform, from which one can look not only at the dam in all details, but also the surrounding mountains.
The causeway is connected with a number of strife situations, the reason being the proximity of the dam to the border between Georgia and Abkhazia. In the course of the division of USSR territories, the dam and the hydroelectric power station remained on the territory of Georgia, and a number of the important energy complexes to Abkhazia have passed. In 1992, the parties succeeded in finding the compromise and distributing the energy generated by the hydroelectric power plant, which has been generating electricity all over the Inguri river for several years. ... Bridge of Peace

From the series “The Most Unusual and Strange Bridges on Earth”
In Georgia there are also strange bridges, which are worth seeing for the curious tourists. The Peace Bridge in Tbilisi is one of the most popular urban sights. It stretches over the Kura River and connects the old town of Tbilisi with the new residential areas. The length of the pedestrian bridge, which is characterized by the exquisite design, forms 156 meters.
The bridge is decorated with a large glass canopy that shines like a giant crystal in the sunshine at the time of the day. The bridge design was developed by the famous Italian architect Micele de Lucci. The French designer and lighting designer Phillip Martino designed the decorations. In addition to hundreds of glass panels, the bridge is decorated with 30,000 LED bulbs, which are switched on at nightfall.
At first glance, it may seem that the tiny lights are shimmering chaotically. In reality, they send an important message with Morse alphabet. The message contains the names of the main elements of which the human body consists. The bridge was opened in 2010. The initiator of the construction was the President of the country, Micheil Saakashvili. On the picturesque bridge you can even walk in the bad weather and enjoy the panorama on the river. The canopy protects safely from any storm. ... Complete sights collection

Katskhi Pillar

From the series “The Most Cozy Towns Full of Zen”
In Georgia, fans of spending time in remote places should go to the Katskhi Pillar. This sight is located in the eponymous village. The landmark rises above the ground for 40 meters. The pillar is a limestone monolith with an ancient temple on top of it. The exact date of construction of the temple is unknown. According to rough estimates, it was built no later than the 8th century.
Even in pagan times local residents associated the pillar with the almighty god of fertility. They believed that the rise to the top of the pillar can bring them closer to the divine powers. The first temple had been built on top with advent of Christianity. The shrine has existed for several hundred years and emptied only during the Ottoman invasion. After the military action, first attempts to subdue the pillar were committed only in the 18th century. However, all attempts were in vain.
The group of climbers made it possible to conquer the unbearable 40-meter structure only in 1944. They first found ruins of the ancient temple atop of the pillar. For several years, an archaeological research was conducted on top of the monolith and at its surrounding area. Many amazing artifacts as well as the remains of an unknown monk were discovered during that time. Several years ago, the temple on the mount was rebuilt. Today that’s an important place of pilgrimage and a major attraction in the region. During construction of a new temple ruins of former buildings were used. The temple was named after St. Maximus the Confessor. Now everyone can climb there using a specially set hanging ladder. ... Complete sights collection

Temple of Tsmind Sameba

Temple of Tsmind Sameba has placed on the top of the hill of Saint Elias in Tbilisi, Georgia. Its name translates from the Georgian language as the temple of the Most Holy Trinity. This cathedral was built from 1995 to 2002, that’s why we can call it a young one. Its area is about 5 000 square meters, that is rather large for a temple.
This building is the largest in the whole city. Thanks to the good placement, even from every corner of the city you can see it. The main peculiarity of the Temple of Tsmind Sameba is its magnificent appearance while the inner decoration is rather modern. Mostly there was used a typical granite. The temple doesn’t have any decoration, only icons and traditional religious items. The iconostasis is the most luxurious thing in it. There were used precious materials, pearl and enamel.
The cathedral is surrounded by a huge territory with a garden. A walk in this garden will be great as in summer as in winter. There you can see a lot of trees and rare plants. In summer the garden is decorated with wonderful landscape compositions. Also, there have placed several great viewing points where you can see the city from the bird's flight. Tourists with children will like this place too. There is a pond with ducks on the territory of the temple. Near the pond, you can see small houses with sheep and other domestic animals.
