Inguri Dam, Georgia

From series “The Greatest Dams in the World”
Year: 1977. Height: 272 meters.

In Georgia there is a dam that is worth seeing for tourists and travelers. Inguri Dam was built on the river of the same name and has a height of 272 meters, making it one of the highest settlements in the world. The construction work on the Inguri river began more than 50 years ago. For the first time the hydroelectric power plant had already started in 1977.

Inguri Dam, Georgia Together with the underground power plant, the dam forms a gigantic hydrotechnical complex, which is connected with the hydroelectric power station, which is located on the Eristskali river. Inguri is one of the most beautiful dams in the world thanks to the surrounding wonderful mountain landscapes. The charming Georgian town of Dzhavari and its surroundings have long attracted many tourists, so it was decided a few years ago to perfect the tourist infrastructure next to the dam. Since the dam is the closed object, the simple people can not get to it. At the disposal of the curious tourists is an excellent viewing platform, from which one can look not only at the dam in all details, but also the surrounding mountains.

The causeway is connected with a number of strife situations, the reason being the proximity of the dam to the border between Georgia and Abkhazia. In the course of the division of USSR territories, the dam and the hydroelectric power station remained on the territory of Georgia, and a number of the important energy complexes to Abkhazia have passed. In 1992, the parties succeeded in finding the compromise and distributing the energy generated by the hydroelectric power plant, which has been generating electricity all over the Inguri river for several years.
