Shopping in Abaco - authentic goods, best outlets, malls and boutiques

The Abaco Islands are extremely popular among tourists (especially American ones). There are many stores here: from just little ones to impressively huge shopping centres. If you want to buy something, it’s better to pay in the Bahamian dollar. Even though the currency is quite pegged to the United States dollar, still different exchangers provide different exchange rates. Anyway, there is one simple rule: the closer exchangers to overcrowded touristic points – the less profitable exchange rate is. Prices here are almost the same as in the USA. It can slightly vary depending on a type of product. For example, almost all the food products imported and their delivery pretty expensive, so you won’t find any cheap food here.
According to historians, the Abacos archipelago – it includes Great Abaco, Little Abaco and some small uninhabited islands – used to be deserted till the 5th century AD. The Lucayan … Open
On the other hand, some kinds of goods are almost a quarter cheaper than in most countries. The reason for it is quite simple – there are no import and export duties on some goods. For example, here you can buy perfumes by famous manufactures, handbags, belts, shoes by world-famous firms, and gorgeous watches. Such goods as golden, silver or platinum jewellery, cameras, and different accessories for it are rather cheap as well. Porcelain cups, teapots or chinaware would be a really nice purchase. Porcelain goods are also free of duty so it’s brought to the islands from all around the world.
If you don’t want to spend your money on buying various jewellery, watches or leather products, then take a look at the authentic goods by the local craftsmen like diverse dolls. The tradition of making these toy protectors from the world beyond came from the Dark Continent along with slaves who were brought here. Nowadays creating those dolls-charms is not only a traditional tribute but they are lovely and unusual souvenirs as well. There are also quite a lot of racy souvenirs like fetishes and different protectors which are brought from Africa too. Even if you’re a skeptic you can buy something of that kind just as a memento. Hand-made staff from straw would also be a very nice decoration for your apartment. The locals have been creating lovely things for already a few centuries (and they use not only this whimsical material). You can buy here, for instance, a magnificent straw casket – it demands lots of hard work to make one – or a small straw rug. If you’re looking for something more practical, then pay your attention to skillfully made wicker chair or bread box. People sell a huge amount of carve from wood souvenirs too. These can be statuettes of African Gods and spirits, depictions of animals and plants, diverse caskets, cutting boards, and even some kitchen stuff. Some tourists also purchase paintings by local painters.
Here on Abaco local masters sell various things made from shells and sponges in large quantities. Besides, you can buy water from the famous «fountain of youth» here as well. Perhaps, it doesn’t guarantee any healing properties, but it would certainly be a nice memento. Here you can find a great number of souvenirs associated with the creativity of Ernest Hemingway. What is more, you can also buy a pirate flag, an eye patch or a miniature version of fearsome privateers’ frigate. Actually, pirate theme is incredibly popular here on Abaco. And, of course, any tourist can try excellent rum here. Or you can also buy a local beer called Kalik. It’s famous for its light color and bright expressed taste of wheat.

Switcher – the local non-alcoholic drink on the bases of citrus juice – would be a good gift for those who don’t like alcoholic drinks. A stone figurine of an exotic animal or a local version of Barby doll in the National clothes would also be good souvenir ideas. Remember, that if you buy something directly, on a market or in a small shop, it’s obligatory to bargain as the locals usually overcharge in order to get more money from tourists. One more tip for you: shopping on Sunday is not a good idea. On Sundays, most of the stores are closed despite administrative guidance. In the afternoon the majority of shops are closed for lunch, so the best time for shopping is a period from 9.00 a.m. to 1 p.m. or from 5.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.

However, it is better to compare the prices and quality of items from different sellers before making a purchase. As a rule, tourists buy clothing, food, and souvenirs in this market. Bargaining is not prohibited. The Bahamas Rum Cake Factory in Nassau is a paradise-like place for all sweet tooths and fans of quality alcohol.
