One of the main attractions of Indonesia is Krakatau volcano, which is reasonably considered among the most powerful and dangerous volcanoes in the world. Its last eruption began August 26, 1883, and lasted for several months. Explosions of incredible strength could be heard in several thousand kilometers. The eruption of Krakatau sparked one of the largest tsunamis in human history. Waves reached 40 meters of height.
Destructive elements has caused the death of 34 000 people and was a trigger for serious geological changes. The island, which until 1883 housed the volcano, was completely destroyed during the eruption. A huge caldera has formed there. In 1927, the newly awakened volcano eruption triggered the emergence of a new caldera in the center of the cone, called Anak Krakatau. The height of this volcano, whose name can be literally translated as Child of Krakatoa is 813 meters. The original volcano was much higher.
After a powerful eruption of the stratovolcano, which occurred in the late 19th century, surrounding areas began attracting researchers from around the world. Scientists found out that Krakatoa was one of the oldest volcanoes in the world and actively erupted back in the prehistoric era. As so, one of the most powerful eruptions occurred in the 6th century AD. It could cause a serious climate change on the planet. Even then, each eruption ended in severe geological changes. According to researchers, the Sunda Strait, which divided the island of Sumatra and Java, has been formed in 6th century.
