The Siberian Traps are one of the largest and most well-known magmatic provinces of the world. They appeared about 250 million years ago. Over the years of continuous eruptions, more than 5 million cubic meters of lava was thrown to earth surface. Lava covered a large piece of the modern western Siberia with a total area of about 2 million square km. Scientists believe that the outpouring of the Siberian Traps was the biggest volcanic eruption in the history of the planet. The disaster has been lasting for hundreds of thousands of years.
It is surprising that at such scale of the disaster the lava erupted not through the mouth of the volcano, but through hundreds of large cracks in the ground. The lava that flowed from the earth had high turnover, so it could spread over to hundreds of kilometers. After great amount of time, it has formed an amazing step relief called trap. Today, scientists believe that large-scale basaltic eruptions could cause one of the biggest disasters in the history of the Earth.
The fact is that 250 million years ago about 70 percents of terrestrial organisms, as well as 96 percents of sea creatures became extinct. It is likely that a huge volume of molten lava lead to a serious climate change. The volcanic eruption of that period could cause the death of those creatures. The centre of the Siberian Traps is the city of Norilsk, where formation is the thickest. The city is well-known because of rich minerals deposits on its territory.
