Azenhas do Mar is one of the most unusual towns in Portugal. It is located off the coast near Lisbon. This charming town was also built on the rocks. Its name can be translated from Portuguese as "sea mill". The town got its current name during the Arab occupation. It was at this time that the first water mills were built on its territory. This town began to attract travelers in the early 20th century. The first tram line was launched on its territory at this time.
The picturesque beaches are one of the main features of Azenhas do Mar today as they were many years ago. Natural pools formed in some places along the coast in the rocks. Grape plantations are another amazing attraction of the Portuguese town. Locals have managed to cultivate them for hundreds of years, despite the scarcity of soil in these places. Grape seedlings have to be buried to a depth of 10 meters so that they take root in the sandy soil.
