In Japan, in the small town of Ise is situated the main shrine of the country - the Great Temple of Ise. Only the priests of the temple can enter its territory, as well as representatives of the imperial family. Ordinary travellers can only admire the religious shrine from afar. The main temple of the country looks more than modest. It is built of wood and decorated in accordance with centuries-old traditions.
In accordance with the Shinto concept of death and rebirth, the temple is being completely destroyed every 20 years and then it is being rebuilt again. Partly because of this, the construction is very modest in scale and appearance. The main Shinto shrine is dedicated to the goddess of the sun Amaterasu. Within the walls of the temple there are many unique national treasures and imperial relics. So, it is here that the Sacred Mirror is kept.
Despite its inaccessibility, the Ise Temple is incredibly popular with tourists. It is located in the most beautiful natural area, surrounded by dense green hills and untouched forests. Travellers will have an opportunity to stroll through the picturesque places and admire the shrine from one of the cliffs. On the territory of the national park, that surrounds the shrine, there are many interesting historical sites and other shrines. Unlike the Great Temple, they are accessible to everyone.
