One of the most fascinating streets in the world is situated on the island of Tenerife, in La Orotava. Every year, Corpus Christi is celebrated in this ancient town in June. The main street in front of the town hall is decorated with artful handcraft carpets. Volcanic sand of different shades is used to draw this unique pictures. The best artists of the city spread sand and flower petals on the pavement to make incredible beautiful artistic compositions depicting biblical motifs.

Artists use more than twenty shades of sand. In average, a single artistic paintings is created in about 40 days. Amazing pictures of volcanic sand feature impressive size. In 2006, the picture of 950 square meters was created. It became the record holder of Guinness World Records. The street decorated with carpets is home to a number of iconic landmarks. Besides the Town Hall, you can see an old church there, as well as tiny old houses, which were built over a hundred years ago.

The tradition of decorating the street with fine carpets has originated over 150 years ago. In the mid-19th century, on the eve of one of the major religious holidays, the Monteverde family decorated its house with a small carpet of volcanic sand. In a few years, the tradition has spread all over the city, and then became a mandatory part of the celebration. In recent years, paintings are created using not only the volcanic sand, but the flower petals and colorful pebbles.
