For years, it has been the most important fortifications on the island and has repeatedly defended it from invaders. Today the castle is partially restored; it is home to the town library and the theater, which regularly hosts various cultural events. In the upper part of the city there is a famous religious landmark, the Church of the Three Hierarchs. There are lots of interesting stories and legends about it.
The island is famous for its natural attractions. Must-see destinations of many tourist programs are Skotini-Spilia and Galaz-Spilia. Literally, their name can be translated as ‘a dark grotto’ and ‘a blue grotto.’ The internal atmosphere of caves fully complies with those beautiful names.

Above the city rises the Castro cliff, on top of which in the 16th century the fortress was built. According to rough estimates, there were about three hundred houses and at least 30 churches on its territory; only two religious buildings have remained to these days. One of the main distinguishing features of the island is an abundance of ancient monasteries. In the vicinity of the capital there is the Monastery of St. Charalambos.

An important historical object is the monastery of Evangelistria. In 1807, in its walls there was a significant event - the contemporary Greek flag was raised for the first time. In the north-western part of the island there is Kehriysky monastery; it is considered one of the most secluded and beautiful ones. The Monastery of the Kunistra Virgin would appeal to fans of excursions, as some of its buildings have been converted into the Museum of Byzantine Culture. Fans of natural attractions will also be interested to visit the Koukounaries nature reserve located in the southern part of the island.
