Another beautiful holiday tradition of lighting large fires dates back to the late Middle Ages. In ancient times locals believed that this ritual allows to drive witches and evil spirits away from the town. The significant part of celebrations is held in Uppsala Castle (Slottet). During the daytime, local musicians and artists play there. The beautiful holiday dedicated to long-awaited spring always attracts to the city a lot of tourists.
Another well-known youth event, the Festival of reggae, is held in Uppsala too. It is the biggest event of its kind in Scandinavia. The very first music festival was held in summer of 2001. Initially, a few hundred people were taking part, but by 2005 the number of regular guests of the festival has increased to 10,000. The festival attracts not only fans of the musical tradition, but music fans from all around the world.
