The history of Erfurt extends back over 1,500 years. The central area of the city is the most valuable treasure. A lot of historical buildings have survived there until today, including half-timbered houses and Renaissance buildings. Erfurt offers a lot of interesting places to its visitors. There are 36 ancient churches and 15 monasteries alone in the city.
The Old city is pedestrian; the Domplatz is considered to be its center. Mariendom, the cathedral church and a symbol of Erfurt, is located there. Together with Severikirche it forms an amazing architectural complex.
There are lots of interesting facts about every historical building in the city. Martin Luther has lived at Augustinerkloster monastery early in the 16th century after he had completed course at one of Erfurt's universities. Kufmannskirche is famous for its unique architecture as much as the fact it was wedding place of parents of Johann Sebastian Bach.
