The air in Dzerzhinsk has the increased concentration of toxic pollutants that threaten the locals. Even more than 50 years ago, this city was the huge center of the chemical industry. Dzerzhinsk has maintained this important industrial status to this day. In Dzerzhinsk not only household chemicals, but also chemical weapons are produced. In the surroundings of the city is one of the largest landfill of industrial waste in the world. The ecologists from the different countries know the unsuccessful Igumnovo district.
The slowly decomposing wastes add irreparable damage to the soil and make it absolutely sterile. Some of the toxins evaporate into the air. The landfill was organized here forty years ago and has been burning almost continuously since the 1990s. The level of use was so high that there were regularly accidents on the road near the landfill. Although it was officially allowed to bring only the household waste to the Igumnovo landfill, this garbage heap was actively used by the numerous chemical companies in Dzerzhinsk.
Thanks to the cooperation of the Russian ecologists, it has managed to extinguish the landfill a few years ago. However, the full prevention of the ecological catastrophe still exists in the wide field. In the city there are still many large rubbish heaps, one of which is called 'White Sea'. It was organized in 1973. At present, more than 7 million tonnes of chemical waste is kept on the rubbish heap. The processing of such a quantity of the chemical waste requires the enormous material expenditure, and is therefore postponed every year.
