Orpheum Theatre, USA

In the US city of New Bedford, you can visit the abandoned Orpheum Theatre. Its opening took place in 1912. At that time, it was a true architectural masterpiece. Surviving fragments of the decoration of the old theater represent skilful stucco, elements of artistic painting, and fine reliefs. The theater has worked for 47 years. The last performance took place there in 1959.

Since its opening, it was not open for the general public. Only the wealthiest and famous people of the country could visit the show. Tickets were sold out many months in advance. At that time, a hall of the theater could accommodate up to 1 500 people. Despite of the immense popularity during the years, the theater has accumulated a lot of debts. In 1959, it was decided to shut down the facility. There was no money to pay the debts of the theater and have it repaired.

In 1962, the old theater was converted into a warehouse, which stored tobacco. Today a small part of a historic building is occupied by a supermarket. The rest of the construction is vacant and, despite the fact that it is privately owned, it’s not difficult to get into the old theater. It preserved a stage and an auditorium with seating area. You can still see the old furniture and even carpets in some rooms. However, the former luxury of the Orpheum Theatre has gone. The ambience is scary.
