Peter moved the capital from Moscow to Saint Petersburg in 1712. The population of St. Petersburg changed significantly – almost 40,000 inhabitants. The capital soon started to develop intensively, particularly in ship building. Menshikov Palace, Peter and Paul Cathedral and the Summer Palace became well-known in the city architecture of the early 18th century.
By 1716 the styles of Domenico Trezzini left marks in the impressive Baroque constructions of city architecture, which was designed specially for Peter the Great. Then was Elizabethan Baroque, represented most notably by Bartolomeo Rastrelli.
