Playa del Carmen is situated 68 km (42 miles) south of Cancun, a major tourist center in Mexico. Many Cancun dwellers regard Playa del Carmen as a refuge from the hustling and bustling city life and arrive here to take the edge off the workweek exhaustion. There are a few points to remember for newcomers.
It is advisable to pick out a small motel in town rather than to spend money on an all-inclusive hotel. Anyway, it is not the hotel comforts that you have come here to see! In Playa del Carmen, you can enjoy activities that are not available elsewhere, such as diving, trekking, snorkeling, and other ways to admire the underwater environment. This is what it is worthwhile to spend the surplus on! Also, beware of souvenirs sold on Quinta Avenida (main street), because the same stuff is available on side streets at a much lower price.
You can find and visit a good deal of interesting sights around the city. Take a ferry to the Conzumel Island and snorkel your head off there! If you want a touch of history, please, see the Maya ruins of Tulum and Cobá.
