It is advisable to pick out a small motel in town rather than to spend money on an all-inclusive hotel. Anyway, it is not the hotel comforts that you have come here to see! In Playa del Carmen, you can enjoy activities that are not available elsewhere, such as diving, trekking, snorkeling, and other ways to admire the underwater environment. This is what it is worthwhile to spend the surplus on! Also, beware of souvenirs sold on Quinta Avenida (main street), because the same stuff is available on side streets at a much lower price.
You can find and visit a good deal of interesting sights around the city. Take a ferry to the Conzumel Island and snorkel your head off there! If you want a touch of history, please, see the Maya ruins of Tulum and Cobá.
There is one more popular tourist destination - the 'eco-archaeological park', located south of the city. If you are still interested in how the downtown area looks, take a stroll down the Quinta Avenida, where you can find all sorts of shops, boutiques, hotels and restaurants.
