Glasgow Hostels

With ports on the river Clyde, Glasgow became one of the world's main centers of engineering, trade, shipbuilding and locomotive construction. The former wealth can still be seen in the architecture of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Alexander 'Greek' Thomson.

In the post-war period, the city suffered from a severe recession. The population reduced nearly in half. The economic downturn, unemployment and poverty led to serious social problems and the appearance of notorious gangs.

In the 1980s, Glasgow's economics experienced an active resurgence. The 'miles better' campaign made it a European financial centre and promoted an increase in investment and tourism. The city was reborn as a centre of style and vitality set against a backdrop of impressive Victorian architecture, for example the Glasgow City Chambers; the main building of the University of Glasgow, and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
