Nowadays, Kranjska Gora is a popular and prosperous winter resort. Its history goes back to the 1st century BC. This territory belonged to the Romans at that time. The land was a part of Pannonia, a province in the Roman Empire. First Slavic tribes appeared in the area in the 6th century. They settled down here, forming a state that existed until the 40s of the 8th century.
During the Middle Ages, the Habsburg dynasty became the ruler in the region. Only when the Austro-Hungarian Empire stopped existing, the Slovenian state joined the Kingdom of Serbian, Croatian, and Slovenian peoples that eventually became a new country, Yugoslavia. When Yugoslavia ceased to exist, Kranjska Gora became a part of Slovenia. Starting from the middle of the 20th century, the popularity of the resort has been increasing, and so Kranjska Gora has become an internationally renowned alpine skiing destination. Of course, there are ski runs for more advanced skiers. The total length of all trails is roughly twenty kilometers. There are also special cross country ski trails for tourists who do not like high speed and high elevation pistes. The length of the cross-country runs is forty kilometers. Kranjska Gora offers a range of exciting activities for everyone, even for tourists who prefer to hike in the mountains. There are special hiking trails for this category of guests. Exploring them will certainly leave many pleasant memories. It is also important to mention a swimming pool, an indoor tennis court, and an ice skating rink.
Comfortable ski lifts take vacationers to the top. In order not to make a ski vacation in Kranjska Gora unpleasant, there are twenty-three ski lifts in the resort. Eighteen of them are surface lifts. Some of the ski lifts are quite old and deserve to be exhibited in a museum. Dating back to the inception of the resort, these ski lifts feature T-bars, soundless lifts, and even ski lifts with seats for one passenger. Despite their age, these lifts are in great condition and work non-stop.
Visitors from Eastern Europe enjoy visiting the Orthodox Christian Chapel. This is an important religious landmark that signifies the brotherhood of different Slavic nations. Dedicated to Prince Vladimir, this chapel dates back to World War I. Russian war prisoners built the chapel. The building is reminiscent of Russian churches and consists of two moderate-sized towers. Graves of Russian soldiers surround the church.
The Assumption Church is considered the oldest landmark in Kranjska Gora. The building of the gorgeous church started in the 14th century. At that time, the church was literally the only building in the settlement. Only a Romanesque-style bell tower has remained from the original building. The church that tourists can see today was rebuilt in the 16th century, turning the initially Romanesque church into a Gothic one.
As a rule, tourists get to Kranjska Gora from the country’s capital, Ljubljana. The international airport in this city is situated only sixty-six kilometers from the resort. After that, continue your journey in a rented car or hire a taxi. It will take roughly forty-five minutes to reach Kranjska Gora. There is a cheaper way to get to the resort – by train or bus from Ljubljana. In this case, tourists need to make a change in Jesenice. The journey time will be longer – roughly two hours.
