Sightseeing in Druskininkai - what to see. Complete travel guide
One hundred and thirty kilometers from Vilnius, there is the oldest resort city in Lithuania – Druskininkai. This resort has an impressive size. Many people know about Druskininkai because of its mineral springs and healing mud. The air is this region in incredibly clean, and nature is perfect for a great vacation. Nowadays, the resort is developing actively, and the number of visitors becomes bigger every year. A recent opening of an aqua park made the city’s infrastructure even better. Are you searching for a place to spend a weekend and do something healthy? Then Druskininkai is the right choice.
In 1793, the doctor of King Stanislaw Augustus proved that mineral springs in the Druskininkai region have healing power. After that, the settlement became a popular resort. However, the healing properties of local mineral springs were well-known much earlier, yet in the 17th century. Thanks to this natural “remedy”, a local farmer, Pranas Surutis, became famous as a healer. However, Druskininkai started developing actively as a resort only after Nilokai I had visited this area.
Grutas Park, which is situated in the city’s suburbs, is an important historical landmark for Druskininkai. The territory of the park is an open-air museum surrounded by tall trees. Viliumas Malinauskas established the park in 2001. There is an exhibition dedicated to GULAG during the Soviet Union period in the park. Monuments, which were previously in different cities in Lithuania, were transferred to Grutas Park and surrounded by the barbed wire. There are statues of politicians, communist activists, and military leaders in the park.
During a walk in this museum, visitors will see sculptures of Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, and Felix Dzerzhinsky. Besides them, there are many monuments dedicated to communists, famous activists, military people, and, without a doubt, a prominent personality of World War II - Marytė Melnikaitė who was partisan fighting with fascists. There is also an exhibition with medals of the Stalin period, different badges and posters. Don’t forget to visit an exhibition with military equipment as this is the most interesting part of the museum.
Are you interested in religious landmarks? There is an Eastern Orthodox Church in the center of Druskininkai that is built to honor Our Lady. The church is dedicated to the icon of the Joy of All Who Sorrow. In 1857, vice governor Yakov Rozhnov built a temporary church. Eight years later, a wooden shrine appeared on the site of that church. This is the building that we can see nowadays. At the end of the 90s of the 19th century, the first Sunday school opened in the Joy of All Who Sorrow Church.
This church is an attractive building with five cupolas. The outer walls of the building are painted in white and blue. The church looks particularly attractive after sunset when the evening mist covers the city. All walls of the church have illumination that makes the shrine look even more mysterious and unforgettable. It should be noted that no other church in Lithuania has a similar illumination. The last major renovation in the church took place at the end of the 70s in the 20th century. Since that time, the doors of the church have always been open for everyone who wants to see it and pray.
Tourists craving for active recreation and entertainment can spend many pleasant moments in the ONE Park. This incredible park attracts both adults and children. If you like nature and physical activities, this is the right place to visit. All guests of the park can choose from one of the six trails that are built on the trees. Each trail has various contests, traps, and other amusements that can thrill and excite even very courageous visitors. The bravest visitors can try to cross the river using the “Tarzan’s flight”.
A comfortable bus takes guests of Lithuania from Vilnius to Druskininkai within two hours. There are many buses that go in this direction, roughly ten every day. There is also a bus that goes from Kaunas. In this case, you will reach the Lithuanian resort in approximately three hours. Druskininkai has a well-developed transport system, so it is easy to get to the city center by public transport or taxi.
