The land of Bad Gastein was settled more than thirteen centuries ago for the first time. The first settlers led a peaceful life. Bad Gastein became enough a large town to enter the domain of the archbishops of Salzburg. The medicinal properties of local springs were discovered in 1230. Bad Gastein waters contain radon. Famous scientists Marie Curie and Heinrich Mache proved this. But celebrities came here even without scientific confirmation. Influential figures such as the Austrian Empress Elizabeth of Bavaria and Emperor Wilhelm were among them. The famous psychologist Sigmund Freud settled in the resort at the very beginning of the 20th century. He was so impressed by the local beauty that he spent seven years in Bad Gastein. The railway was laid very close to the town in 1905. This has led to an increase in the number of foreign visitors.

Several dozen beautiful hotels were located on the territory of the town by the middle of the last century. They were very diverse from very modest and small houses to luxury residences designed for rich guests. Unfortunately, the resort's popularity began to decline in the 60s. A lot of houses of past centuries have been preserved in the town. The entire appearance of the resort has changed little over the past century, largely because there are not too many modern buildings here. You should spend a couple of hours walking and exploring old buildings, even if you came here solely for the sake of the ski slopes. Also, be sure to visit the Church of St. Nicholas. It was built in honor of the patron Saint of sailors, sellers, and children. The church itself was built back in 1380. Only the bell tower has remained intact since that time. The church itself was completely rebuilt in 1755-1757. Features characteristic of the Baroque began to predominate in its appearance.

The church is an excellent example of a combination of two such dissimilar styles as Gothic and Baroque. It always attracts travelers with its antiquity and monumentality. Besides, the reconstruction did not affect the interior. You can see the frescoes on the biblical theme in the temple today. They were created by the famous master Schroeder in 1480.
